Rupa Jha is a highly driven and creative media executive. She is an editorial leader with more than twenty years’ experience of working for the BBC in India, the UK and Nigeria. As the Head of India for BBC News from 2016-23, she built and lead the BBC’s strategically important language operations in India, which has grown to become the organisation’s biggest market globally. Under Rupa, the Indian Language services – in Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu have grown to be among the most successful and influential out of the BBC’s 42 language services globally. She also led the BBC’s Bengali, Indonesian, Nepali and Sinhala services as well as the English digital operations in India.
In 2019 she was recognised as the BBC’s “leader of the year” for her role in transforming the Indian operations. She is also the recipient of the 2021 Poynter Institute executive fellowship for media transformation challenge. She has also received multiple awards for her journalism.
